2 Minute Disciple | Daily Faith Journey for Spiritual Growth

Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Teaching shape your day.

Day 161 — John 6:22–29 — Working for Food That Lasts

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s fantastic to be here with you today.
Today is June 10.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

We carry so much around every day — financial worries, relational stress, anxiety about the future, and the pressure to succeed.
Now is the time to set those things down for a few minutes and enjoy some time with Jesus.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are patient.”
As you exhale, pray: “Give me Your patience.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read

The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized Jesus had not gone with them. Several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him. They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”
They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”
Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
(John 6:22–29, NLT)

Notice

What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a phrase that surprises or challenges you?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread

Hear this exchange again — and notice what Jesus identifies as the real reason the crowd is following Him.

Meditate

The crowd has crossed the lake looking for Jesus. They are motivated, persistent, determined. And Jesus looks at them and names what is really driving them: You are looking for Me not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
It is a gentle but direct diagnosis. They weren’t following Jesus because they had encountered the living God. They were following Him because He had fed them — and they wanted more of the same. They were using Jesus to get something He could provide, not seeking Jesus Himself as the thing they needed.
And then He reframes everything: Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life — which the Son of Man will give you.
The crowd asks the right follow-up question: What must we do to do the works God requires? And Jesus’ answer is disarmingly simple: The work of God is this — to believe in the One He has sent.
Not a list of religious duties. Not an elaborate spiritual program. Believe in Jesus. That is the work. That is what God is asking for. And everything else — all the service, all the discipline, all the obedience — flows from that one foundational act of trust.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Am I following Jesus because I genuinely want Him — or am I primarily following Him for what He can give me? And have I truly done the one work He asks: to believe in Him?

Respond

Jesus, I want You — not just what You provide. You are the food that endures. You are what I truly need.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Examining Your Motives
Today’s habit is a moment of honest self-examination: sit quietly for two minutes and ask yourself — and God — what you are really seeking from Jesus right now.
Are you seeking His provision, His comfort, His solutions to your problems? Or are you genuinely seeking Him — His presence, His will, His person?
Write down your honest answer. Then bring it to God: “Jesus, this is what I’ve actually been seeking. I’m not sure it’s the right thing. Reorder my hunger. Let me want You more than I want what You can give me — and let that be the work I do today: simply to believe in You.”
