Introduction

Welcome to Week 2 of An Apprenticeship to Jesus: Gospel of Mark Study. I’m Nick Oyler, and it’s a joy to walk through Scripture with you. In this episode, we explore Mark 2 — a chapter full of powerful moments where Jesus demonstrates His authority, compassion, and wisdom.

Last week in Mark 1, we learned the importance of slowing down for prayer. This week, we’ll see Jesus heal a paralytic, call Levi the tax collector, teach about new wine, and clarify the meaning of the Sabbath.

Summary of Mark 2

In Mark 2:1–28, Jesus:

  • Heals a paralytic lowered through a roof and forgives his sins.
  • Challenges the scribes by showing His authority as the Son of Man.
  • Calls Levi, a tax collector, to follow Him.
  • Dines with sinners, explaining His mission is to call the sick, not the righteous.
  • Teaches about fasting, new wine in fresh wineskins, and the Sabbath’s true purpose.

Key Lessons from Jesus

Faith can move obstacles – The friends of the paralytic didn’t let a crowd stop them from bringing him to Jesus.
Jesus has authority to forgive sins – This was shocking to the religious leaders but central to His mission.
Compassion over condemnation – Jesus welcomed sinners to His table.
The Sabbath is for man’s benefit – It’s a gift, not a burden.

Weekly Spiritual Exercises

Pick one to practice this week:
Gratitude Journal – Write down at least 5 things you’re grateful to God for each day.
Scripture Memory – Memorize Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
Compassion Practice – Look for someone in need and offer help without expecting anything in return.

How to Apply Mark 2 in Your Life

Mark 2 challenges us to:
Break through barriers to bring others to Jesus.
Extend compassion to people society overlooks.
Rest in God’s gift of the Sabbath.
Live with the confidence that Jesus has authority over sin and life.
