An Apprenticeship to Jesus: Gospel of Mark Bible Study – Mark 1

Introduction to the Gospel of Mark

Welcome to An Apprenticeship to Jesus, a Bible study series through the Gospel of Mark. Our goal as followers of Christ is to become more like Jesus each day. As the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:29, God has chosen us to be conformed to the image of His Son.

In this series, we’ll walk through each chapter of Mark, spending time with Jesus in the Scriptures, learning His way of life, and applying His teachings to our daily walk. This week, we begin with Mark 1, where Jesus’ public ministry starts.

Reading Mark 1 – Jesus’ Ministry Begins

Mark opens with John the Baptist preparing the way for the Messiah, calling people to repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins. In this chapter, we see:

  • Jesus baptized in the Jordan River by John.
  • The Holy Spirit descending on Jesus like a dove.
  • Jesus proclaiming the Kingdom of God is at hand.
  • The calling of the first disciples — Simon, Andrew, James, and John.
  • Miracles of healing, including casting out demons and cleansing a leper.
  • These events reveal Jesus’ authority, compassion, and mission.

Discussion Questions for Mark 1

Reflect on these questions to deepen your discipleship:

  • What did Jesus say in this chapter?
  • What did Jesus do in this chapter?
  • What surprised you about Jesus?
  • How can you live more like Jesus this week? (Tip: Discuss these with a friend or small group to grow together in faith.)

Weekly Discipleship Exercises

Choose one exercise to practice this week:

  • Gratitude Journal – Write down 5 things you’re thankful to God for each day.
  • Scripture Memory – Memorize Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
  • Compassion – Look for someone in need and offer help without expecting anything in return.

Closing Prayer

Father, we kneel before You, asking that Your Spirit strengthen us to follow Jesus faithfully. May we be deeply rooted in Your love, understanding the depth of Christ’s love, and living lives that bring You glory. Amen.
