Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is March 17.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.
Slow Down
You are stepping into a sacred space with the intent of meeting Jesus.
He wants to meet with you and spend time with you.
Take this moment to slow down, quiet your mind, and prepare your heart to connect with Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Lord, have mercy.”
As you exhale, pray: “Teach me Your heart.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read
At about that time Jesus was walking through some grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began breaking off some heads of grain and eating them. But some Pharisees saw them do it and protested, “Look, your disciples are breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.”
Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God, and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. And haven’t you read in the law of Moses that the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath? I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple! But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” (Matthew 12:1–8, NLT)
Notice
What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.
Reread
Hear the passage again being mindful of what Jesus is saying to you.
Meditate
The disciples are hungry. Their small act of picking grain becomes a flashpoint for controversy. Jesus answers by pointing to Scripture—examples where human need and temple service intersect with Sabbath law.
Then He says something stunning: “There is one here who is even greater than the Temple!” The place where God’s presence and forgiveness were centered is now surpassed by the Person standing among them.
He quotes Hosea: “I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.” God’s heart is for compassion over cold religious performance. Jesus insists that if the Pharisees understood this, they would not condemn the innocent.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Where am I tempted to “condemn the innocent” in my thoughts or words, instead of showing mercy like Jesus?
Respond
Jesus, thank You for revealing the Father’s heart of mercy. Teach me to show mercy as I have received mercy from You.
Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Keep Mercy Before Your Eyes
Today, download the phone wallpaper that I made with the verse —Matthew 12:7 “I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.”
Set it as your phone wallpaper or lock screen for the day. Each time you see it, pause and ask: “Lord, how can I choose mercy in this moment?”
You can find it on the show page for today.
That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard… and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
