Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Word shape your day.

Day 44 — Mark 1:16–20 — Called to Follow

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it is awesome to be here with you today.
Today is February 13.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is here. He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him.
You may have a million things on your mind, but for these few moments, set them aside. Relax. Calm your body.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper in your heart: “You call me.”
As you exhale, pray: “I will follow.”
Repeat this three times, then sit in silence for a few moments.

Read

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon* and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him.
A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets. He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men.  (Mark 1:16–20, NLT)

Notice

What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a phrase or truth that speaks directly to you?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread

Hear the passage again slowly.
Be mindful of what God may be speaking to your heart right now.

Meditate

Imagine it: you’re standing on the shore, the salty breeze on your face, your hands rough from years of casting nets, mending ropes, and hauling in fish. This is your life — the rhythm of the waves, the smell of the catch, the security of knowing who you are and what you do.
Then, in the middle of an ordinary workday, Jesus walks by. His eyes meet yours, and with a voice that somehow feels both gentle and commanding, He says, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people.”
There’s no long explanation, no promise of comfort, no guarantee of what’s ahead. Just an invitation. And in that moment, you know — following Him means leaving behind everything familiar: your nets, your boat, even the life you’ve built.
The disciples didn’t hesitate. They didn’t ask for more time. They stepped away from the shore and into a future they couldn’t yet see, trusting that being with Jesus was worth more than anything they were leaving behind.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
If Jesus stood before me today and said, “Follow Me,” what would I have to drop — and would I do it without hesitation?

Respond

Lord, I will follow You wherever You lead. Give me courage to leave my nets behind.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Drop Your Net
Today, choose one small thing that’s been distracting you from fully following Jesus — it could be a habit, a worry, or even a comfort you’ve been reluctant to let go of.
Write it down on a piece of paper. As you hold it, picture yourself standing on that shore with Jesus calling you to follow Him.
Now, physically drop the paper in a trash bin or tear it up, symbolizing your willingness to lay it down. As you do, whisper: “Lord, I’m leaving this behind to follow You.”
Keep your eyes open today for moments when you feel that distraction tugging at you again — and remember the choice you made to drop your net.
