Let’s begin.

Slow Down

You are stepping into a sacred space with the intent of meeting Jesus.
He wants to meet with you and spend time with you.
Take this moment to slow down, quiet your mind, and prepare your heart to connect with Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are coming soon.”
As you exhale, pray: “I want to be ready.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read

“Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks. The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat! He may come in the middle of the night or just before dawn. But whenever he comes, he will reward the servants who are ready.
“Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would not permit his house to be broken into. You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.”

Reread

Hear this passage again and notice what readiness looks like — and what Jesus promises to those who are ready.

Meditate

Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning.
This is the image Jesus gives us of readiness. Not anxious waiting. Not passive sitting. Dressed for service. Lamps burning. Alert. Present. Engaged.
The servants in this parable aren't lounging around wondering if the master will ever come back. They're ready. They're watching. And when he arrives — at whatever hour — they're prepared to open the door immediately.
And then Jesus does something unexpected with the parable. The master who returns doesn't sit down and let the servants serve him. He puts on an apron and serves them.
This is the upside-down Kingdom again. The master becomes the servant. The one who is waited for becomes the one who waits on others. Jesus is painting a picture of what His return will look like — not a distant king demanding tribute, but a loving master who rewards faithfulness with intimate, personal care.
But notice the condition: the servants who are ready and waiting.
Readiness isn't a one-time decision. It's a daily posture. It's the choice, every morning, to be dressed for service — to live as if today might be the day. Not in fear. Not in anxiety. But in faithful, active engagement with the life God has given you.
The burglar analogy makes the point sharply: you don't know when. So you have to be ready all the time.
What does readiness look like in practice? It looks like living with integrity when no one is watching. It looks like serving faithfully in the ordinary moments. It looks like keeping your lamp burning — staying connected to Jesus, staying filled with His Spirit — so that when He comes, you're not scrambling to find oil.
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
If Jesus returned today, would He find me dressed for service — faithfully doing what He's called me to do — or would He find me distracted, disengaged, or living for myself?

Respond

Jesus, I want to be ready when You return. Not just in theory — but in practice. Help me to be dressed for service today. Help me to keep my lamp burning. Help me to live with the kind of faithful, alert readiness that honors You — not because I know when You're coming, but because I know that You are.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Live Ready
Today's habit is an act of faithful readiness: identify one area of your life where you've been living as if Jesus isn't coming back — and make one change today.
It might be a relationship where you've been cutting corners on love and honesty. It might be a habit you've been tolerating that you'd be ashamed of if Jesus walked in right now. It might be a calling you've been putting off — waiting for a better time, a more convenient season, a moment when you feel more ready.
Write it down. Be honest.
Then ask yourself: If I knew Jesus was returning tonight, what would I do differently today? What would I stop? What would I start? What would I finally say or do or give?
Now bring it to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, I've been living as if Your return is far off — as if I have plenty of time to get serious later. But You said You're coming when least expected. Help me to live ready. Help me to be dressed for service today — not tomorrow, not when I feel more prepared, but today. I want You to find me faithful when You return."
Then make the change. Have the conversation. Take the step. Serve the person. Do the thing you've been putting off.
The servants who were ready didn't have to scramble when the master arrived. They were already dressed. Their lamps were already burning.
Live ready today. And let that readiness be the evidence of a heart that truly believes He is coming.
