2 Minute Disciple | Daily Faith Journey for Spiritual Growth

Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Teaching shape your day.

Day 217 — Luke 11:33–36 — Light vs Darkness

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is August 12.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is here. He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him.
You may have a million things on your mind, but for these few moments, set them aside. Relax. Calm your body.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are the Light of the world.”
As you exhale, pray: “Fill me with light.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read

“No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house.
“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when it is unhealthy, your body is filled with darkness. Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness. If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.”
(Luke 11:33–36, NLT)

Notice

What hits you most?
Is there a phrase that jumps out to you?
Hold that phrase gently before the Lord.

Reread

Hear this passage again and pay attention to the contrast between light and darkness.

Meditate

What you look at determines what fills you.
Jesus uses two images here — a lamp on a stand and the eye as a lamp — and they work together to make one powerful point.
First, the lamp. A lamp isn't lit to be hidden. It's lit to give light to everyone in the house. If you have light, it's meant to be seen. It's meant to illuminate. It's meant to benefit others.
But then Jesus turns the image inward. He says your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your whole body. When your eye is healthy — when what you're looking at, focusing on, and filling yourself with is good — your whole body is filled with light.
But when your eye is unhealthy — when what you're consuming, dwelling on, and giving your attention to is dark — your whole body is filled with darkness.
And here's the warning that should make us pause: "Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness."
It's possible to think you're walking in light while actually walking in darkness. It's possible to be so accustomed to the dark that it feels normal. It's possible to consume content, pursue goals, and fill your mind with things that slowly crowd out the light — without even noticing it's happening.
What are you looking at? What are you filling yourself with? What occupies your attention, your screen time, your thought life?
Because whatever fills your eye fills your body. And whatever fills your body is what shines out of your life.
If you are filled with light — with no dark corners — then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.
That's the invitation. Not just to avoid darkness. But to be so filled with light that there's no room for dark corners.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
What am I looking at — what am I filling myself with — that might be crowding out the light?

Respond

Jesus, You are the light of the world. Fill me with Your light. Expose the dark corners I've been ignoring. Help me to fix my eyes on what is true, good, and beautiful. And let my life shine — not for my own glory, but so that others can see You.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Guard Your Eye
Today's habit is an act of honest inventory: examine what you've been filling your eye with — and make one deliberate change.
Take a few minutes to think honestly about what occupies your attention. Your screen time. Your social media feed. The content you consume. The conversations you dwell on. The thoughts you entertain.
Ask yourself: Is this filling me with light — or with darkness? Is this making me more like Jesus — or less? Is this something I'd be comfortable with if Jesus were sitting next to me?
Write down one specific thing you've been looking at — consuming, dwelling on, or giving your attention to — that is filling you with darkness instead of light.
Then make one deliberate change today. Unfollow an account. Delete an app. Turn off a show. Replace a habit with something that fills you with light — Scripture, worship, a conversation with a trusted friend, time in creation.
Before you make the change, pray: "Jesus, I've been filling my eye with _________________. I can feel it crowding out the light. I'm choosing today to guard what I look at — because I want to be filled with light, with no dark corners. Help me to fix my eyes on You."
Your life will shine in proportion to what you fill it with. Guard your eye. Fill yourself with light. And watch your whole life become radiant.
