Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is here. He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him.
You may have a million things on your mind, but for these few moments, set them aside. Relax. Calm your body.
Close your eyes, take a deep breath in and slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I want to be clean.”
As you exhale, pray: “Help me to be generous to the poor.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read

As Jesus was speaking, one of the Pharisees invited him home for a meal. So he went in and took his place at the table. His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony required by Jewish custom. Then the Lord said to him, “You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and wickedness! Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside? So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over.
(Luke 11:37–41, NLT)

Hear this passage again — and notice what really makes a person clean.

Meditate

Jesus skips the handwashing — and the Pharisee notices immediately.
It wasn't an accident. Jesus knew exactly what He was doing. He was creating a moment — an opportunity to expose something far more serious than unwashed hands.
"You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy — full of greed and wickedness."
The Pharisees had mastered the appearance of holiness. They knew every rule, every ritual, every ceremony. They washed their hands the right way, at the right time, with the right words. From the outside, they looked spotless.
But Jesus looks at the inside. And what He sees is greed and wickedness hiding behind religious performance.
Then He says something surprising: "So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over."
Why generosity? Because greed is the specific disease Jesus has diagnosed. And the antidote to greed is giving. You can't be generous and greedy at the same time. When you open your hands to give to those in need, you're doing something that greed cannot survive.
This is the inside-out life Jesus is calling us to. Not religious performance on the outside while the inside remains unchanged. But a heart genuinely transformed — and generosity is one of the clearest signs of that transformation.
It's easy to look clean. It's much harder to be clean. And Jesus is far more interested in the inside of the cup than the outside.
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
What does my generosity — or lack of it — reveal about what's really going on inside me?

Respond

Jesus, I don't want to just look clean on the outside. I want to be clean all the way through. Expose the greed and selfishness I've been hiding behind religious habits. And help me to open my hands — to give generously to those in need — as a sign that You are truly transforming me from the inside out.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Clean the Inside
Today's habit is an act of deliberate generosity: identify one specific way you can give to someone in need today — and do it.
It doesn't have to be large. It might be a financial gift to someone struggling. It might be a meal for a neighbor. It might be your time given to someone who is lonely. It might be a donation to a ministry serving the poor. The size isn't the point. The posture is.
Before you give, pause and examine your heart. Ask yourself honestly: Is there greed or selfishness in me that I've been ignoring? Am I more concerned with the appearance of generosity than the reality of it?
Then give — not to look good, but because Jesus is cleaning you from the inside out.
Pray: "Jesus, I want to be clean all over — not just on the outside. I'm choosing to give _________________ today as an act of surrender. I'm loosening my grip on what I have. I'm trusting that You provide. And I'm letting generosity be the evidence that You are changing me from the inside out."
