2 Minute Disciple | Daily Faith Journey for Spiritual Growth

Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Teaching shape your day.

Day 150 — Matthew 9:35–38 — The Harvest Is Plentiful

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s so cool to be here with you today.
Today is May 30.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is glad you’re here. He longs to spend time with you. He loves you deeply and wants to be in your presence.
Take a moment to pause, quiet your mind, and turn your attention toward Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, give me Your eyes.”
As you exhale, pray: “Let me see people the way You do.”
Do this three times, then rest in silence.

Read

Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”  (Matthew 9:35–38, NLT)

Notice

What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a phrase that surprises or challenges you?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread

Hear this passage again — and pay attention to what Jesus feels when He looks at the crowds, and what He asks His disciples to do about it.

Meditate

Jesus is moving through town after town teaching, preaching, healing every disease and illness. And then Matthew gives us a window into what Jesus sees when He looks at the crowds: people who are harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
That phrase - harassed and helpless — is worth sitting with. These are not bad people. They are not enemies. They are exhausted people.
People carrying more than they can manage, without anyone to guide them, without anyone to show them the way. And when Jesus looks at them, He doesn't feel frustration or impatience. He feels compassion - deep, gut-level compassion.
Then He turns to His disciples and reframes everything. The need in front of them is not a problem — it is a harvest. A plentiful harvest.
And the issue is not that the harvest is too small or that people aren't ready — the issue is that there aren't enough workers. So He gives them an assignment that might surprise us: don't go out yet. First - pray. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into the field.
Before action comes prayer. Before the mission comes the request.
Jesus is teaching His disciples — and us — that the work of the kingdom begins on our knees, asking God to move what only He can move.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
When I look at the people around me — my neighborhood, my workplace, my family - do I see them the way Jesus sees them? And am I praying for workers, or just observing the harvest from a distance?

Respond

Jesus, give me Your eyes. When I look at the people around me, let me see what You see. Stir compassion in me where I have grown indifferent. And make me willing not just to pray for workers — but to be one.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Praying for Workers
Today's habit is the one Jesus Himself assigned: pray for the harvest.
Specifically, think of three people in your life who don't yet know Jesus — by name, with intention — and spend a few minutes praying for them today.
Pray that God sends workers into their lives. Pray that He opens doors. Pray that He prepares their hearts. And be willing to consider— as you pray — that you might be the worker He sends.
This is where the mission begins. Not with strategy or programs - but with a disciple on their knees, asking the Lord of the harvest to move.
Pray: "Lord of the harvest, I bring these three people to You by name. Send workers. Open doors. Prepare their hearts. And if You want to use me - I am willing"

I have one ask of you before you go, could you please share this podcast with one person today? One person at a time will grow this podcast to help more people walk with Jesus.
That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard…share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
