Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Teaching shape your day.

Day 136 — Mark 4:26–29 — The Seed Growing Secretly

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Kylie and it’s awesome to be here with you today.
Today is May 16.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

You are stepping into a sacred space with Jesus.
Set aside the distractions of your day.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are at work.”
As you exhale, pray: “Even when I can’t see it.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read

Jesus also said, “The Kingdom of God is like a farmer who scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, while he’s asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens. The earth produces the crops on its own. First a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally the grain ripens. And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle, for the harvest time has come.” (Mark 4:26–29, NLT)

Notice

What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread

Hear this parable again — and let its quietness wash over you. Notice what the farmer does not do, and what happens anyway.

Meditate

This is one of the most quietly comforting parables Jesus tells — and one of the least often discussed. A farmer scatters seed. And then — he sleeps. He wakes. He goes about his days. And the seed grows. He doesn’t understand how. He doesn’t make it happen. The earth, Jesus says, produces the crop on its own.
This parable is a profound word for anyone who has been striving to make spiritual growth happen — in themselves or in others. We are not the ones who produce the harvest. We scatter the seed. We do our part. And then we trust a process that is larger than our understanding and beyond our control.
There is rest in this. The kingdom of God does not advance on the strength of our anxiety or our effort. It grows by the power of God — quietly, steadily, often invisibly — in the dark soil of human hearts, in the slow work of the Spirit, in ways we will not see until the harvest arrives.
This does not mean passivity. The farmer still scatters. He still shows up at harvest. But between the scattering and the harvest, he is freed from the compulsion to dig up the seeds every morning to check on their progress. He trusts the process. He trusts the One who designed the seed and the soil and the sun.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Is there a person, a situation, or an area of my own growth where I need to release control and trust that God is at work — even when I cannot see it?

Respond

Father, thank You that the growth of Your kingdom does not depend on me. Give me the peace of the farmer who sleeps and wakes and trusts that You are working in the dark.
Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Trusting the Process
Today’s habit is an act of surrender: identify one area — in your own spiritual life, in a relationship, in your work for the kingdom — where you have been striving to make something happen that only God can produce, and consciously release it to Him today.
Write it down. Name it specifically. Then pray: “Lord, I have been trying to force what only You can grow. I scatter what I have — my faithfulness, my prayers, my effort — and I release the outcome to You. I trust that You are at work, even when I can’t see it. Even while I sleep.”
Then let it go. Return to your day. And trust the Farmer who designed the seed, the soil, and the harvest.
