Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Teaching shape your day.

Day 135 — Mark 4:21–25 — The Lamp on a Stand

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s amazing to be here with you today.
Today is May 15.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is here. He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him.
You may have a million things on your mind, but for these few moments, set them aside. Relax. Calm your body.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are the light.”
As you exhale, pray: “Reveal what You want in me.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read

Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”
Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”  (Mark 4:21–25, NLT)

Notice

What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a phrase or truth that speaks directly to you?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread

Hear these words again — and notice that Jesus connects the lamp image directly to how carefully we listen.

Meditate

Jesus has just finished explaining the parable of the sower, and now He presses further: a lamp is not lit to be hidden. Light exists to illuminate — to make visible what would otherwise remain unseen.
In context, Jesus is speaking about the truth He is revealing. These parables, these teachings, this revelation of the kingdom — they are not meant to stay hidden. They are meant to shine. They are meant to be received, lived out, and allowed to illuminate everything they touch.
But there is also a personal dimension here. Jesus says that everything hidden will eventually come to light — every secret brought into the open. This is not only a warning about hypocrisy. It is also an invitation to honesty. We do not need to hide anything from God — and the parts of our lives we have been keeping in shadow are precisely the parts that most need the light.
Then Jesus makes the connection to listening: Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given. This is a principle of spiritual growth — it is not passive. Understanding is given to those who lean in, who pay attention, who take seriously what they are hearing and act on it. The lamp gives light to everyone in the room — but only those who open their eyes receive the benefit.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Is there something I’ve been keeping in the shadows — from God, from others, or from myself — that needs to be brought into the light today?

Respond

Jesus, give me the understanding that comes to those who genuinely pay attention — and let Your light shine in every corner of who I am.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Bringing Things to Light
— Confess One Hidden Thing to God Today and Receive His Forgiveness
Today’s habit is an act of courageous honesty: bring one thing into the light today that you’ve been keeping in shadow — a sin, a fear, a secret struggle, a hidden resentment — and confess it to God openly and receive His forgiveness.
You don’t need elaborate words. Just honesty: “Lord, I’ve been keeping this in the dark. I bring it into the light now. Forgive me. Heal me. I don’t want to hide anymore.”
