Day 16 — Luke 3:2–3 — Hearing God in the Wilderness

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it is awesome to be here with you today. Today is January 16.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

You are stepping into a sacred space with the intent of meeting Jesus.
He wants to meet with you and spend time with you.
Take this moment to slow down, quiet your mind, and prepare your heart to connect with Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. Repeat this three times.
As you inhale, whisper in your heart: “Speak, Lord.”
As you exhale, pray: “I’m listening.”
Do this three times, then sit in silence for a few moments.

Read

Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. (Luke 3:2–3, NLT)

Notice

What are you hearing from God?
What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread

Now hear the passage again slowly, being mindful of what God is wanting you to hear from Him.

Meditate

I love to be out in nature — whether it’s hiking in the woods, walking along the beach, or sitting on a dock with a fishing line in the water.
When I take the time to get alone in nature, I tend to hear from God more clearly. It becomes a conversation in the quiet wilderness.
I’m struck by the phrase: “A message from God came to John in the wilderness.”
God gave John his mission while he was spending time away from the noise, in a place where he could truly listen.
John’s mission was to prepare the hearts of the people for Jesus’ ministry and message. And God spoke to him in a setting where His voice could be heard.
We live in a world full of constant noise that makes it hard to hear from God.
We need to intentionally find places — physical or spiritual — where we can quiet the noise and listen for His message.
Take a few moments to reflect on this truth: God is speaking to us if we will only quiet the noise to listen.

Respond

God, speak to me today.
Open my ears to hear from You and soften my heart to be receptive to Your message.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Take a Walk
Get out in nature and quiet the noise so you can hear from God.
As you walk, have a conversation with Him.
The goal is to slow down, get outside, and listen.
That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.

Now, take what you’ve heard… and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
