Lectio Divina: An Ancient Way to Meet Jesus in the Scriptures

365 With Jesus

If you’ve ever wanted to move beyond simply reading the Bible to truly encountering Jesus in its pages, there’s an ancient Christian practice that can help you do just that. It’s called Lectio Divina, which means “Divine Reading” in Latin.

This isn’t about rushing through a chapter or filling out a study guide — it’s about slowing down, listening deeply, and letting God’s Word speak directly to your heart. For centuries, followers of Jesus have used Lectio Divina as a way to hear His voice, know Him more intimately, and be transformed by His presence.

What is Lectio Divina?

Lectio Divina began in the early centuries of the Church, especially among monks who wanted to dwell deeply in Scripture. It’s not a Bible study in the academic sense — it’s a prayerful, meditative way of reading that treats Scripture as a living conversation with God.

The goal?

Not just to understand the text, but to experience the One the text reveals — Jesus Himself.

The Traditional Rhythm

Historically, Lectio Divina follows four movements:

Lectio — Read the passage slowly and attentively.
Meditatio — Reflect on what stands out; let it sink in.
Oratio — Respond to God in prayer.
Contemplatio — Rest in God’s presence, letting His Word shape you.

Our Modified Rhythm for 2 Minute Disciple

In 365 Days With Jesus, I’ve adapted Lectio Divina into a simple, repeatable flow that fits modern life and works perfectly for short daily episodes:

Slow Down— Create sacred space, breathe deeply, and invite Jesus to speak.
Read — Engage the passage with your full attention.
Notice — Identify the word, phrase, or truth that catches your heart.
Reread — Let the passage speak again, listening for God’s personal message to you.
Meditate — Reflect on the meaning and how it connects to your life.
Respond — Speak to God honestly about what you’ve heard.
Exercise — Carry the truth into your day through a simple, intentional habit.

Why Practice Lectio Divina?

When you make this a daily habit, you’ll begin to notice:

A deeper awareness of God’s presence — You’ll start recognizing His voice in Scripture and in daily life.
A more personal connection to Jesus — The Bible becomes a living dialogue, not a distant textbook.
Transformation from the inside out — God’s Word will shape your thoughts, attitudes, and actions.
Peace in the midst of busyness — Slowing down with Jesus reorients your soul toward what matters most.

Conclusion:

As we journey through 365 Days With Jesus together on the 2 Minute Disciple podcast, I invite you to treat each episode not just as a time to listen, but as a sacred appointment with the Lord.

Let’s slow down, open our hearts, and meet Jesus in His Word — one passage, one breath, one moment at a time.
