Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s awesome to be here with you today.
Today is September 17.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.
Slow Down
You are stepping into a sacred space with Jesus.
Set aside the distractions of your day.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I love You.”
As you exhale, pray: “Thank You for loving me.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read
“But that doesn’t mean that the law has lost its force. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest point of God’s law to be overturned. “For example, a man who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery. And anyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.”
(Luke 16:17–18, NLT)
Notice
What hits you most?
Is there a phrase that jumps out to you?
Hold that phrase gently before the Lord.
Reread
Hear this passage again — and notice what Jesus has to say to you.
Meditate
Jesus makes a stunning statement: "It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest point of God's law to be overturned."
The smallest point. Not the big commandments. Not the obvious ones. The tiniest detail of God's law is more permanent than the physical cosmos itself.
This statement directly confronts the Pharisees' selective approach to Scripture. They claimed to justify themselves before others while failing to actually live according to the law. They had developed workarounds. Loopholes. Rationalizations.
Jesus uses divorce as a concrete example. The Pharisees had developed a permissive reading of the Old Testament provision on divorce. Many permitted divorce for virtually any reason. Some even rationalized that if a man desired another woman, divorcing his current wife and remarrying avoided adultery—a mental gymnastics that allowed them to justify themselves before humans while ignoring what God actually said.
Jesus identifies this for what it is: self-justification. Making the law fit your life instead of making your life fit the law.
Here's what should land: we do this too. We find loopholes. We rationalize. We reinterpret Scripture to make it say what we want it to say. We work around God's Word to justify our choices.
We tell ourselves:
"Everyone's doing it, so it must be okay."
"God wants me to be happy, so this is fine."
"That was for a different time. It doesn't apply now."
"God understands my situation is different."
But Jesus is saying: the law stands. Every detail. Every point. Even the smallest one. It's easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for God's Word to lose its force.
The question isn't: How can I make Scripture fit my life? The question is: How do I make my life fit Scripture?
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
What would it look like to stop justifying myself and start obeying God?
Respond
Jesus, I'm done working around Your Word. I'm done finding loopholes. I want to live according to what You actually said, not what I wish You said. Help me have the courage to obey, even when it's hard.
Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: The Loophole Audit
Today's habit is an act of honest examination.
Jesus said the smallest point of God's law remains unshakeable. So today, you're going to identify where you've been working around Scripture.
Spend 15–20 minutes on this exercise:
**Part 1: Find Your Loopholes: **Identify one area of your life where you've rationalized or reinterpreted Scripture to make it fit what you want to do. Where have you created a loophole?
Write it down. Be specific. Don't soften it.
**Part 2: Name the Rationalization: **Now ask yourself: What story do I tell myself to justify this? What loophole did I create?
Examples:
- "Everyone's doing it, so it must be okay."
- "God wants me to be happy, so this is fine."
- "That was for a different time. It doesn't apply now."
- "God understands my situation is different." Write down the exact rationalization you use. **Part 3: Choose Obedience: **Finally, commit to one step of obedience in this area—not because you feel like it, but because Jesus said it. It might be:
- Ending a relationship that doesn't align with Scripture
- Changing how you spend your money
- Adjusting your words or your entertainment
- Making a hard choice that honors God's Word over your comfort Before you commit, pray: "Jesus, I'm done rationalizing. I'm done creating loopholes. I'm choosing to obey You—not because I understand it all, but because You said it and I trust You. Help me follow through, even when it's hard."
I have two asks of you before you go, could you please share this podcast with one person today and check out the review of this podcast on Elevate Society?
That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard…share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
