Slow Down

Jesus is glad you’re here. He longs to spend time with you. He loves you deeply and wants to be in your presence.
Take a moment to pause, quiet your mind, and turn your attention toward Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: "Jesus, make me salty."
As you exhale, pray: "I want to bring the flavor."
Do this three times, then rest in silence.

Read

“Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”
(Luke 14:34–35, NLT)

Hear these words again—listening and understanding.

Meditate

Jesus finishes His call to discipleship with a metaphor that's hard to understand in our 21st-century Western context. But it would have hit His audience like a thunderbolt.
In Jesus's day, salt extracted from the Dead Sea wasn't pure sodium chloride. It was a mixture containing gypsum and carnallite. The salt crystals could dissolve over time, leaving behind a residue that looked like salt but had lost all its flavor. This wasn't theoretical—it was a real phenomenon Jesus's audience knew well.
Here's what Jesus is saying: If disciples don't manifest the distinctive characteristics I require—if you're not willing to renounce comfort, security, and even life itself—then you're not a real disciple. You're worthless to Me.
That's harsh. But it's honest.
The metaphor captures something subtle and devastating: a false form of discipleship might initially appear authentic. But gradual compromise, slow drift, quiet compromise—it leaves only an empty shell. You look like salt, but you've lost your saltiness.
The final call—"He who has ears to hear, let him hear"—isn't merely poetic. It's a call to decision. After all the conditions of discipleship have been set forth and the consequences made clear, Jesus is asking: Will you listen? Will you actually hear what I'm saying?
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
Am I a real disciple of Jesus, or do I just look like one?

Jesus, I'm all in. I don't want to be flavorless. I want my life to bring the distinctive taste of Your Kingdom to everyone around me. Keep me real. Keep me salty.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Taste and See
Today's habit is an act of awareness.
Salt doesn't announce itself. It works quietly, enhancing flavor, making things better. But you only notice it when it's missing—or when it's overdone.
Today, pay attention to the flavor you're bringing to the world around you.
As you move through your day, pause three times and ask yourself:
1. In this conversation, am I bringing the distinctive flavor of Jesus? Or am I blending in, saying nothing, adding nothing?
2. In this moment, am I living out what I claim to believe? Or am I performing discipleship without the substance?
3. Am I real, or am I just looking the part?
You don't need to do anything dramatic. Just be aware. Notice where you're salty and where you've gone flat.
Then, before bed, write down one moment where you brought real flavor—and one place where you compromised or stayed silent when you should have spoken up.
Tomorrow, you'll know better. You'll choose differently.
Salt life isn't about being loud or obnoxious. It's about being real. Distinctively, unmistakably real.
