Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is September 6.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.
Slow Down
We carry so much around every day — financial worries, relational stress, anxiety about the future, and the pressure to succeed.
Now is the time to set those things down for a few minutes and enjoy some time with Jesus.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I rejoice.”
As you exhale, pray: “Because you heal on all days.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read
One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” And they could not reply to these things.
(Luke 14:1–6, NLT)
Notice
What strikes you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it before the Lord for a moment.
Reread
Hear this passage again — and notice how Jesus responds to being watched.
Meditate
They were watching Him carefully.
Jesus walks into a Pharisee's home for dinner — and the room is already set up as a test. There's a man with dropsy right there in front of Him. Was he placed there intentionally? We don't know. But the lawyers and Pharisees are watching. Waiting. Ready to pounce if Jesus does what they expect Him to do.
And Jesus knows it. He sees the trap. He sees the man. And He asks the question before they can: "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"
Silence.
They can't answer. If they say yes, they've undermined their own objection. If they say no, they look heartless in front of a suffering man. So they say nothing.
And Jesus heals him. Immediately. Completely. And sends him on his way.
Then He presses the point: "Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?"
More silence. They could not reply.
Here's what's striking about this passage: Jesus doesn't wait for permission. He doesn't ask for approval. He doesn't modify His behavior because He's being watched. He sees a man in need — and He acts.
The Pharisees were watching Jesus to catch Him doing something wrong. But Jesus was watching the man — and seeing someone who needed to be healed.
It's a question worth sitting with: when we're in situations where people are watching us — where we're being evaluated, judged, or tested — what are we looking at? Are we managing our image? Or are we looking for the person in the room who needs help?
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
When I'm being watched or tested, do I focus on managing my image — or on seeing the person in front of me who needs Jesus?
Respond
Jesus, when I'm being watched, tested, or evaluated — help me to keep my eyes on the person in front of me, not on the people around me. And help me to act with the same freedom and compassion You showed in that room.
Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: See the Person in the Room
Today's habit is an act of deliberate attention: identify one person in your life who is suffering — quietly, invisibly, without making a fuss — and do one thing today to acknowledge them and help.
Write their name down.
Bring them to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, help me to see __________ the way You saw the man with dropsy. Help me to act — not when it's convenient, not when it looks good, not when everyone approves — but now, because they need help and I'm here. Give me the freedom and the compassion to pull them out of the well."
See the person in the room. And act.
I have two asks of you before you go, could you please share this podcast with one person today and check out the review of this podcast on Elevate Society?
That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard…share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
