2 Minute Disciple | Daily Faith Journey for Spiritual Growth

Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Teaching shape your day.

Day 240 — Luke 13:28–30 — Last to First

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s fabulous to be here with you today.
Today is September 4.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is here. He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him.
You may have a million things on your mind, but for these few moments, set them aside. Relax. Calm your body.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I want to eat with you.”
As you exhale, pray: “I’ll take any place just to be there.”
Repeat this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read

In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
(Luke 13:28–30, NLT)

Notice

What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that stands out to you?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread

Reread Hear this passage again — and notice what Jesus says about who will be at the table.

Meditate

The table is bigger than anyone expected.
Jesus has just told the crowd about the narrow door — the urgency of truly knowing Him, of being all in rather than merely nearby. And now He describes what happens on the other side of that door.
There is a table. And at that table sit Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets. The great heroes of faith. The ones who trusted God when there was no evidence, who followed when there was no map, who believed when belief seemed impossible.
And people come from east and west, from north and south — from every direction, every nation, every background — and they recline at the table together.
But some who expected to be there are not. The ones who assumed their heritage, their religious background, their proximity to Jesus would be enough. The ones who were first in their own estimation — first in religious status, first in cultural privilege, first in their own minds — find themselves last.
And the ones who were last — the outsiders, the unexpected, the ones nobody would have predicted — find themselves first.
This is the upside-down Kingdom again. The one Jesus has been describing all along.
Here's what this passage invites us to examine: Are we approaching God's Kingdom with entitlement or with hunger? Are we assuming our place at the table — or are we, like the prodigal son, willing to take any place just to be there?
The people who recline at the table in the Kingdom of God are not the ones who assumed they deserved it. They're the ones who came from every direction — hungry, seeking, willing to travel from east and west and north and south just to get there.
That hunger. That willingness. That "I'll take any place just to be there" posture — that's what gets you through the narrow door.
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
Am I approaching God's Kingdom with entitlement or with genuine hunger — and what would it look like to come to Him with nothing but a desire to be at His table?

Respond

Jesus, I want to be at Your table. Not because I deserve it. Not because of my religious background or my years of following You. But because I'm hungry for You. I'll take any place just to be there. Thank You for the invitation. Help me never to take it for granted.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Come Hungry
Today's habit is an act of genuine spiritual hunger: identify one way you've been approaching God with entitlement rather than hunger — one area where you've been assuming your place rather than seeking it.
Write it down. Be honest.
Bring it to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, I've been approaching You with entitlement when it comes to _________________. I've been assuming my place rather than seeking it. But I don't want to be someone who is cast out because I assumed I was in. I want to come hungry. I want to come desperate. I'll take any place at Your table — just let me be there. Restore my hunger for You today."
The table is set. The invitation is open. People are coming from every direction.
Come hungry. And take your seat.
