2 Minute Disciple | Daily Faith Journey for Spiritual Growth

Slow down. Meet Jesus. Let His Teaching shape your day.

Day 213 — Luke 11:1–4 — This is How to Pray

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s amazing to be here with you today.
Today is August 8.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is glad you’re here. He longs to spend time with you. He loves you deeply and wants to be in your presence.
Take a moment to pause, quiet your mind, and turn your attention toward Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: "Father, teach me to pray."
As you exhale, pray: "I want what Jesus has."
Do this three times, then rest in silence.

Read

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 Jesus said, “This is how you should pray:
“Father, may your name be kept holy.
May your Kingdom come soon.
3 Give us each day the food we need,
4 and forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
And don’t let us yield to temptation.”
(Luke 11:1–4, NLT)

Notice

What hits you most?
Is there a phrase that jumps out to you?
Hold that phrase gently before the Lord.

Reread

Hear these words again — and pay attention to the movement of the prayer, from God's glory to your daily need.

Meditate

The disciples watched Jesus pray — and they wanted what He had.
They didn't ask Him to teach them to preach. They didn't ask Him to teach them to heal. They asked Him to teach them to pray. Because they saw something in His prayer life that they didn't have — a connection, a depth, an intimacy with the Father that was unlike anything they'd ever seen.
And Jesus gives them a template. Not a script to recite — a framework to inhabit.
Notice the movement of the prayer:
It begins with God: "Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon." Before we bring our needs, we orient ourselves toward God. We remember who He is. We align ourselves with His purposes.
Then it moves to our daily need: "Give us each day the food we need." Not next year's provision. Today's. It's an invitation to daily dependence — to come back to God every morning with open hands.
Then to our relationships: "Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us." We can't receive forgiveness with a closed fist. The posture that receives grace is the same posture that extends it.
And finally to our protection: "Don't let us yield to temptation." We acknowledge our weakness. We ask for God's strength.
This prayer is a complete life of faith in six lines. And Jesus says: this is how you should pray.
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
Which part of this prayer do I most need to make my own today — and what would it look like to pray it with my whole heart?

Respond

Father, teach me to pray. Not just to recite words — but to truly connect with You. Help me to begin with You, to bring my needs honestly, to forgive freely, and to trust You with my weakness. Teach me to pray like Jesus.

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.

Habit: Praying the Template
Today's habit is to pray the Lord's Prayer — not as a recitation, but as a personal conversation with God.
Take each phrase and make it your own. Slow down. Fill in the blanks with your specific life.
"Father, may your name be kept holy" — pause and worship. Name one thing about God that you're grateful for today.
"May your Kingdom come soon" — pray for one person or situation where you long to see God's Kingdom break through.
"Give us each day the food we need" — name your specific need today. Not just physical food — what do you need from God right now?
"Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us" — receive God's forgiveness for something specific. Then name one person you're choosing to forgive today.
"Don't let us yield to temptation" — name the specific temptation you're facing right now and ask God for strength.
This is not a long prayer. It might take five minutes. But it will be the most honest, specific, personal prayer you've prayed in a long time.
Jesus didn't give us a recitation. He gave us a relationship. Pray it like you mean it today.
