Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s awesome to be here with you today.
Today is May 12.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.
Slow Down
We carry so much around every day — financial worries, relational stress, anxiety about the future, and the pressure to succeed.
Now is the time to set those things down for a few minutes and enjoy some time with Jesus.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, prepare the soil of my heart.”
As you exhale, pray: “Let Your word take deep root in me.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read
“Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seed. As he scattered it across his field, some of the seed fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate it. Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow. But the plant soon wilted under the hot sun, and since it didn’t have deep roots, it died. Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants so they produced no grain. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted, grew, and produced a crop that was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted!” Then he said, “Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.” (Mark 4:3–9, NLT)
Notice
What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.
Reread
Hear this parable again — and as you listen, ask yourself honestly: which soil feels most like me right now?
Meditate
Jesus tells this parable without explanation — at least for now. He simply tells it, and ends with the same word He started with: Listen. Anyone with ears to hear — hear this.
The farmer scatters seed generously, indiscriminately, across all kinds of ground. The seed is the same in every case. What differs is the soil. And in that difference lies the entire story.
The path is hard — packed down, impenetrable. The seed never gets in. The shallow soil lets the seed start but has no depth to sustain it. The thorny ground has too many competing things growing — the good seed gets crowded out. And the good soil receives the seed, holds it, and produces fruit beyond what anyone planted.
Jesus is not describing four different kinds of people in the world. He is describing four conditions that any of us can find ourselves in — sometimes in different seasons, sometimes in different areas of our lives at the same time. The hard path of a defended heart. The shallow enthusiasm that doesn’t last. The crowded life where too many things compete with the word. And the open, prepared, receptive heart that bears real fruit.
The question is not which soil exists in the world. The question is which soil you are bringing to Jesus today.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Which of these soils best describes the condition of my heart toward God’s word right now — and what would it take to become good soil?
Respond
Jesus, I want to be good soil. Do whatever is necessary to prepare my heart — break up the hard ground, deepen the roots, clear out the thorns. I want Your word to take hold and bear fruit that lasts.
Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Soil Check
— Identify Which Soil Best Describes Your Heart Right Now and Pray Accordingly
Today’s habit is a moment of honest self-examination: look at the four soils Jesus describes and identify which one most closely matches where you are right now — not in general, but specifically in your relationship with God’s word.
Are you hard and defended — not really letting anything in? Are you enthusiastic but shallow — quick to respond but not sustaining it? Are you crowded — so full of other things that God’s word keeps getting squeezed out? Or are you genuinely open and receptive right now?
Name it honestly before God. Then pray a prayer that matches where you are:
If hard: “Lord, break up the ground. Soften what has hardened in me.”
If shallow: “Lord, deepen my roots. Help me to stay when it gets difficult.”
If crowded: “Lord, show me what needs to go. Clear space for Your word in my life.”
If good soil: “Lord, keep me here. Protect this openness and let it bear fruit.”
