Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is May 5.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.
Slow Down
We carry so much around every day — financial worries, relational stress, anxiety about the future, and the pressure to succeed.
Now is the time to set those things down for a few minutes and enjoy some time with Jesus.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You have forgiven much.”
As you exhale, pray: “Produce deep love in me.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”
Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.”
“Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.
Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other. But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”
Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.”
“That’s right,” Jesus said. Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.
“I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”
And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (Luke 7:36–50, NLT)
Notice
What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment.
Reread
Hear this story again — and this time, notice not just what the woman does, but what moves her to do it.
Meditate
Everyone in this room has a category for this woman. Simon sees a sinner — someone whose presence is contaminating, whose past disqualifies her from this table. But Jesus sees someone who knows how much she has been forgiven.
That is the key to the whole story. Two debtors, two debts canceled, one question: who loves more? The one who knew the weight of what was erased.
Simon kept Jesus at a polite, comfortable distance. This woman couldn’t stay away. The difference wasn’t in their sin — it was in their awareness of it. His self-sufficiency made him courteous but cold. Her honest reckoning with her own need made her extravagant in love.
Jesus is not praising her past. He is praising the love that erupts from a heart that truly understands what it has been forgiven. And He is quietly asking us the same question He asked Simon: Has familiarity with grace made us take it for granted?
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Have I lost a sense of how much I have been forgiven — and has that loss made my love for Jesus grow small and manageable rather than lavish and free?
Respond
Jesus, forgive me for the times I’ve kept You at a polite distance while telling myself I was being respectful. Remind me of what You have actually forgiven me of — all of it — and let that remembrance set my love for You free.
Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Extravagant Gratitude
— Give Something Costly to God or Someone Else Today
Today’s habit is inspired directly by this woman’s act: give something costly today — not because you have to, but because you want to express love and gratitude that has outgrown what is comfortable or convenient.
It might be money given generously beyond what feels easy. It might be your time — a full, unhurried hour given to someone who needs you. It might be an act of service that costs you something real. It might simply be a moment of unguarded, wholehearted worship when no one else is watching — your own alabaster jar broken open before Jesus.
The woman didn’t calculate what was appropriate. She gave what love demanded. That is the invitation today.
Before you give, pray: “Jesus, this is my offering. Not out of obligation — out of love. You have forgiven me much. Let this small act say what words can’t quite reach.”
