2 Minute Disciple

2 minutes of discovery leads to a lifetime of following Jesus!

Day 7 - Matthew 1:18-25 - God With Us | Daily Devotional Podcast (Lectio Divina)

Today is January 7, I’m Nick and it is fabulous to be here with you today.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm:
Slow down…
Read…
Notice…
Reread…
Meditate…
Respond…
and Exercise, take a small step to live out what we’ve heard.
It’s a moment to pause, breathe, and meet Jesus in His Word — so He can shape our hearts and guide our day.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down

Jesus is here. He is sitting in your favorite spot just waiting for you to join Him. You have a million things on your mind that need your attention, but it’s time to be with Jesus. Take a moment to set those things to the side, relax, and calm your body.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. Repeat this three times.
As you inhale, whisper in your heart: “Don’t be afraid.”
As you exhale, pray: “God is near.”
Do this three times, ask God to speak, then sit in silence for a few moments.
When you are ready, begin to read.

Read

This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.
As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’ ”
When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.
(Matthew 1:18–25, NLT)

Notice

What are you hearing from God? What stands out to you in this passage? Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention? Write it down in your journal or here.

Reread

Now read the passage again slowly, being mindful of what God is wanting you to hear from Him.

Meditate

I say a lot of things, and I forget that I said half of them. I say that I will do things, and unless I write them down, I might forget to do them. There are a good number of things that I have said I would do that I never did.
I am thankful that this is not the case with God. If He said that He would do it, He has. There are a few things that we are waiting on, but with His track record, He will do those too. He told Isaiah that the virgin would conceive and give birth to a son 700 years before it happened, but it happened. God did what He said!
Take a few moments to reflect on this truth:
God did what he said he would do, so that he could be with us.

Respond

God, I praise you for doing what you said that you would do…

Exercise

The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Take a Nap
God designed us to work and rest…and do it all over again. However, many people today fail to take the time to rest from their hard work and push their bodies too hard. This is not healthy for us, so let’s make a habit of rest. Set a time today to close your eyes and rest for at least ten minutes.
The goal is to recharge our bodies so that we can do our best work for the Lord.

That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard… and live it.
Whether it’s a prayer in the moment, a smile to light someone’s world, or a helping hand —
let God’s Word shape your steps.
Remember, discipleship isn’t just something we learn…
it’s something we live.
Until next time,
keep slowing down,
keep listening,
and keep walking with Jesus.
