He's looking at people who have devoted their entire lives to religion and missed the whole point of it. Through guided meditation, discover the three specific things Jesus identifies in the Pharisees. First, they tithe meticulously but ignore justice and the love of God. They count out their herb garden down to the last leaf—but they walk past the poor, the marginalized, the suffering. They've mastered the minor details of the law while abandoning its heart. People walk over them without knowing the corruption underneath. They look fine on the surface. They look religious, devoted, careful, and righteous. But underneath, there is death. Their outward religious performance is covering an inward spiritual decay that they themselves may not fully see. This episode explores what makes this passage so deeply uncomfortable. The Pharisees didn't think any of this applied to them. They were the most religious people in their world. They were certain they were on the right side of God.
